Mix It Up

by Jennifer Emich of the Blissful Sisters

“The Blissful Sisters” are triplet sisters Jessica, Jill, and Jennifer Emich. They are the creative force behind Boulder, Colorado’s acclaimed Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place: http://shineboulder.com.

The sisters believe that the relationship you have to food is similar to the relationship you have to yourself and is reflected in how you connect to the world. Having made food their lives passion, they share their food philosophy, healthy living tips, family-friendly recipes, and stories about sisterhood in their debut cookbook, EAT DRINK SHINE: Inspiration from Our Kitchen, Gluten-Free and Paleo-Friendly Recipes (Kyle Books, $29.95 on amazon.com).

Jennifer encourages us to mix things up, to listen to ourselves, and to value play.

Shed the Shortcuts

“One size fits all.” “Eat it once and your life will change.” “Put it on your skin for 28 days and your skin will be transformed.”

We have all heard the short cut suggestions to solving the things we want to change. After years of trying the latest and greatest “shortcut”, I have come to learn that variety is, indeed, the spice of life … that constant change helps keep me in the moment.

Why are we shortcutting through life? Each day is a new way to live. So often we rush through an activity simply to check it off our list and move on to the next task. I was finding myself in this conundrum too often. I needed it to stop.

And Instead …

Instead, I want to taste what I eat; I want to be more present in my life; and I want to embody the activity I’m in. It is expected that we work hard at our jobs. I think we ALSO need to work hard on having fun, on savoring experience, and on being present with our friends, family, community and selves. Mixing up my day to day was the best way to spark this shift.

For too long, I had been doing the same physical activity day in and day out. One day I stopped and thought huh…what if I switch it up and try something different? Frankly, I was bored. I know I’m the type of person that likes to stay in my comfort zone, and that I can get a little stuck there. So, even though I was anxious beforehand, I decided to try a dance class.

I loved it! It was good for my brain and my body came alive in a new way. I felt more present in what I was doing because I actually needed to pay attention. The rest of my inner dialogue fell away. So did the boredom.

I started mixing things up in other aspects of my life as well. Namely, I started bringing new variety into the food I ate. Instead of Wednesday taco nights, I opted for something different! And again, my body responded. I started eating for the way I felt rather than eating for routine. This process is all about trial and error, but it requires LISTENING to your body. That, for me, was a game changer. I feel better at 41 then I have ever felt.

Mix It Up

Wake up and shine

When you mix up what you are eating your body gets a wide spectrum of nutrients. When you mix up your exercise routine, it works different muscles and keeps brain activity high. For me, I know that incorporating variety is what makes me soar. It keeps my body and brain vibrant, moving on all cylinders instead of the same few.

Try it. Mix things up. Enliven the play. It might just surprise you. You might just smile a little bit more and feel the beautiful presence of what is inside of you: YOU in all of your glory.

The Power of Holistic Eating

Holistic Eating takes into consideration more than just what a food is, it considers our individual nutritional needs.

Each body will have different needs. Think of a triathlete, compared to a nursing mom, or someone that lives at a high altitude compared to someone living at sea level. There will be different needs for an elderly person as opposed to a child. All of these aspects are important in making our food choices from a holistic approach.

Our Relationship With Food

Holistic Eating

Arugula Pear Salad

We each have a different relationship to food. Some of us have had a lifetime of dieting and perceived weight issues, others were brought up on fast food, and some may have grown up with allergies or illness.  All of this matters when eating in a holistic manner.  The way you eat should be specifically tailored to you. It should be part of a myriad of wellness activities that promote, health, healing and happiness.

I believe food should bring joy and satisfaction for both the taste buds and the body as a whole. This is possible and comes with understanding your own health needs and your emotional relationship to food. I believe food is an opportunity and an avenue for you to understand yourself better.

I believe your relationship with food is one of the most intimate relationships you have—your food literally becomes you. It is worth it to pay attention, to figure out what makes it both a pleasurable healthful experience for you.

Here are some basic aspects of holistic foods:

  • Whole foods that have not been processed
  • Foods that are organic and GMO free whenever possible
  • Fruits and vegetables that are a variety of colors
  • Cultured foods that support digestion such as sauerkraut, pickled vegetables, and other fermented foods
  • Meats that are grass fed for the most nutritional value, use local whenever possible
  • Seafood that is sustainable, wild and from as clean of waters as possible
  • Cooking oils that are healthy and whole foods such as olive oil, coconut oil and ghee
  • Making dishes that are simple with limited ingredients for easy digestion and optimal absorption
  • Limiting simple starches such as white sugar, artificial syrups, white potatoes and white pasta

Drink Up! Staying Hydrated with Lemon Water

Hydration is one of the single most important factors for a healthy immune system, detoxifying your body, keeping your metabolism in check and your energy up, and a glowing complexion. Yes, just by drinking plenty of good ‘ol H20, you are doing your body magnificent wonders.

I know, we are all busy running around, doing our thing, making it happen—I get it, I live it. But I won’t give up my health and healthy glow because of it.

So what is a girl (you too fellas!) to do to stay on top of her game?

Hydration with Lemon Water

Start the Day Off Right

When I wake up, the first thing I do is heat up the tea kettle. I take half a lemon and squeeze it into my favorite mug. If I am feeling extra sassy (or needing an added boost), I add a hefty teaspoon of ground turmeric and a dash of black pepper (to help assimilate the turmeric into my system).

The Benefits of Lemon Water

The turmeric adds a potent dose of anti-inflammatory properties, makes for good brain food, is an excellent antioxidant, and can even help combat depression to name a few benefits of this miracle root. Lemon aids in digestion and liver function, it benefits respiratory health, has a dose of vitamin C to boost the immune system, and is a powerful detoxifier.

YES, it is worth it to kick off your day this way, I drink two big mugs full every morning. Not only does it help activate my whole body, but it helps keep me hydrated throughout the day and my metabolism moving, making me more alert.

Hydration is Key

I also make sure that I drink about  4-8 oz of water, tea or Shine Potions throughout the day. I feel a difference, I stay energized even if I had a few glasses of wine the night before or haven’t gotten as much sleep as I would like (although plenty of sleep is IMPORTANT too!!).

Proper hydration will keep your body alive, alert, and in good spirits.  Remember we are made up of 60% water so you want to make sure you are getting plenty to rejuvenate, detoxify and keep everything moving. Drink up people, and do your body and mind good.

The Blissful Sisters have owned wildly successful restaurants and community hotspots in downtown Boulder for close to 20 years. This May they share with you some of their favorite recipes, stories and inspirations.

green juice

Green juice is so simple, so gratifying, so hydrating and filled with vitamins and minerals—your body will SHINE from the inside out. We use particular ingredients and prepare it in such a way to make sure your body absorbs all the goodness easily and efficiently.

This green juice is a favorite because you can use whatever produce is in season. Mix and match, come up with your favorites, head to your local farmer’s market or join a community food share to get the freshest ingredients. When produce is local and freshly picked, it has a much higher vitamin and mineral content than vegetables shipped across the country. It also leaves a smaller footprint and supports the local economy. We are all about using the best local, seasonal ingredients we can find. It is the foundation of each and every one of our recipes.

Blissful Sisters Daily Pressed Green Juice

Serves: 2

2 cups filtered water or coconut water

1/2 bunch collard greens

1/2 bunch kale

2 stalks celery or 1 small cucumber

1/2 bunch parsley

handful of baby spinach

Squeeze of lemon or splash of Apple Cider Vinegar

Nut strainer bag

  1.  Chop the collards, kale and celery or cucumber into small pieces.
  2. Steam the greens in a ¼ cup of water and a squeeze of lemon or splash of ACV
  3.  Place in a vitamix  or other powerful high-powered blender and add water or coconut water.
  4.  Blend until all ingredients are completely blended together.
  5.  Pour the liquid through the nut strainer placed over a bowl.
  6.  Strain out all the liquid. Using your hands, push out all the liquid from the pulp.

Kirtan Is Coming To Shine

What is Kirtan?

The ancient musical/spiritual practice of Kirtan generates happiness. An incredibly fun and accessible group practice, Kirtan is sacred call and response chanting from the yoga tradition. Experience a calm mind, open heart, embracing of the body, and profound connection to self, others and the Divine.

Kirtan is a participatory social practice that blends East and West. The leader chants (calls) and the audience responds (response). It’s that simple. Just a few minutes of practice generates happiness and a calm mind for beginners as well as those with decades of experience.

At its highest, Kirtan becomes a form of collective spirituality where each participant serves the group, bringing Love, freedom and healing into each other’s lives. Kirtan with Mike Cohen and Katie Wise is an invitation to chant, clap, meditate and dance together to cultivate deep connection and powerful experiences of Collective Spirituality.

Join Us In the Gathering Place

We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with Boulder-based Kirtan artists Mike Cohen and Katie Wise. This blissful musical partnership begins in February for our monthly Kirtan events at Shine. The first three will be held Saturday evenings at Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place on February 20, March 26 and April 23.

Mike and Katie bring a unique, contemporary and accessible style of Eastern mantras and Western grooves that are guaranteed to delight dedicated Kirtan fans and newbies.

In the past, Shine has partnered with Katie’s Mama ‘Hood Boulder (formerly Yo Mama Yoga). This monthly series will feature sessions with Katie and her band Bhakti Explosion, Mike Cohen and various musicians, as well as double sessions with Mike and Katie. Guest Artists will join for monthly events throughout the year. A Kirtan Immersion weekend is also in the works for fall.

We’re thrilled to host such amazing performers from the Kirtan community, we hope you’ll join us in singing or just enjoying the performances in whatever way you choose. Please check the calendar for more info for each event, we’ll see you there!

How Bone Broth Changed My Life

By Jessica Emich

It took me awhile to catch onto the bone broth craze. I’ve heard a million times of how healing broths are—I learned about it and I even taught about it. I made it every once in awhile and saw the benefits while I drank it, but I never fully committed. If I can be honest, what got me making bone broths more regularly was learning about how the rich collagens in them can help rebuild collagen elastin fibers.

Over the last 5 years I had two beautiful babies and my body has recovered quite well. I feel strong and healthy, but there is that loose skin around my belly area that no hiking, dancing, pilates or sit-up could get rid of.

The Benefits of Bone Broth Collagen

bone broth soup

As I read and studied about the benefits of collagen for this, I was ready to experiment. I have broths going all the time in my crock pot at home or bubbling on my stove during the day—I have come to crave it. I sip it during the day and have a cup before bed at night. And what I discovered along the way has made me a devotee to broths and their effects on the body.

Since drinking bone broth daily, my sleep has been much better. The minerals in rich broths are so easily digested by the body. Because of the demands on modern agriculture, the soil has become more and more depleted of vital minerals. This strips our food of these elements as well. These minerals are so important to every function in our body. I found that replenishing these minerals has balanced my nervous system, helps me drop into sleep more easily, giving me a deeper, more rejuvenating rest.

Eat What Ails You

These broths also have healed my joint pain. The old adage that says “eat what ails you” has proven to be true in my case. I was a gymnast when I was younger and because of it I have had varying degrees of joint and back pain my whole life. It has not been debilitating, but enough to annoy me on occasion. Now that feeling is gone. I combined my broth regimen with a couple of other supplements as well, but I do believe it is mostly the broth I have to thank.

The best broths are made using the bones and joints of the animal. These parts provide glucosamine and collagen to help repair joints and soothe inflammation. They also contain phosphorous, magnesium and calcium to protect and strengthen the bones. It makes me very happy to be able to dance, ski and play with my kids with wild abandon. A real game changer for me!

Goodbye Indigestion

Another BIG plus is the improvement to my digestion. I always thought my digestion was decent; I felt pretty good and handled most foods well. But after having my daily dose of broth, I saw a great improvement that I didn’t even realize was necessary. I was going to the bathroom more regularly and digesting my food more easily.

In the past, I would occasionally get stomach aches or feel bloated and that used to be normal for me. But now that it’s gone, I realize how uncomfortable it can be at times. I also feel more satisfied during the day and less hungry, which keeps my cravings under control and my ability to focus better. These broths also have the ability to help heal our guts, especially when dealing with big challenges such as a leaky gut and food intolerances.

Immune System Boost

Drinking broths has boosted my immune system. If I felt a tickle in my throat or a cough starting in my chest and took to the broths, the illness is not able to take hold. My symptoms let up in a day or two and my energy quickly returns. I use my daughters as guinea pigs for this kind of thing. I make them drink just a bit of broth every morning. They have stayed healthy and energetic so far over the fall and winter and they love it, they actually ask for it.

Making Broth

making bone broth

Making broth is cheap and easy! I tend to make mostly chicken broths because I enjoy it more for sipping. I use mostly wings, bones or my new favorite—feet. What I love about the feet is that when I refrigerate them, the whole batch turns gelatinous and shows how much gelatin and goodness is in there. I call it liquid gold.

The Conclusion?

SO about that loose belly skin. Well, the bone broth has helped. What I’ve realized, now that I am getting better sleep and an overall feeling of energy and health, my outlook has changed. Now I look in the mirror and think, it’s really not so bad. So is it the broth or my state of being that makes me feel this way? I’m not sure, but what I do know is that I will continue my broth fetish with gusto knowing it makes me better all the way around.

Mindful Mixers | Healthy Cocktails and Cocktail Alternatives for the Holidays

The holidays are in full swing and New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. I know you have all been busy eating and drinking, and probably not taking as good of care of yourselves as usual, but here in our Shine Potion laboratory we have concocted a few “Mindful Mixer” cocktail recipes that will keep you nourished for the rest of the season.

By fueling your body with supportive herbs, Shine Potions not only feel good going down but are good for you too. (Keep in mind, drinking in moderation is also good thing. )

In this video, I walks you through creating the ultimate Mindful Mixer cocktail with Shine Potions Owl Eyes for clarity, focus and energy. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Owl Eyes

Instead of the caffeine crash associated with many energy drinks out there, Owl Eyes is crafted with energizing and adaptogenic herbs and juices like Ginger Root, Yerba Mate, Liquid Chlorophyll and Astragalus for a more sustained energy throughout the evening. It won’t leave you with the jittery anxious side-effects you get with so many other energy drinks.

Health Benefits

  • Increases energy in a balanced and focused way using adaptogenic herbs.
  • Is high in minerals and fabulous for the hair and skin.
  • Enhances the mood and reduces feelings of stress and anxiety.
Mindful Mixer Recipe

Add 6 oz of Owl Eyes to 1.5 oz tequila or vodka (we love local distilleries Suerte Tequila and Cap Rock) and garnish with a slice of lemon.
